Girl Reclining

  1. GIRL RECLINING - A spare time computer painting in monotone, circa 2000.

    Sometimes, when I lay my head on a pillow ready to go to sleep, a song comes into my mind, and lingers on and on, keeping me awake . . .

    One day, after spending such a sleepless night, I decided to take time out from an assignment I was doing, and just paint a picture for relaxation . . .

    I selected a prepared 9 x 12 size poster board on which to paint it. I "prepare" a poster board by painting both sides of the board with gesso. If you apply paint to only one side of a poster board it will warp badly.

    I then selected a tube of Payne's Gray (which is actually black) and spread a blob of it on my palette, and next to it I spread a blob of antique white. And while I diddled around selecting a brush, I began singing, silently, in my mind, the haunting tune that had kept me up all night long;

    "Night and day, you are the one . . .
    Only you beneath the moon and under the sun . . .
    Whether near to me or far, no matter where you are . . .
    I think of you . . . Night and day . . . "

    And somehow, while I kept singing that Cole Porter song in my mind, over and over, I created this picture of the reclining girl.

    I painted it in black and white monotone because when you dream, you dream in black and white. And that's how I saw this girl . . . In a dream.
